Small restaurants have its own set of advantages over larger establishments. There’s an instant ambiance, coziness and a sense of homeliness in a cafe or bistro. Restaurateurs need to put up less capital, maintain a smaller staff and pay less towards maintenance and utilities. However, smaller restaurants can produce big profits despite fewer seating arrangements.
If you want to start a new restaurant, location is key. It is the most important element to consider during this process. Just because a space looks good it doesn’t mean it is right for a particular restaurant. A good location is not easy to find. A perfect spot may turn out to be a total dud. Other times, a location you never thought would make for a good restaurant may turn into a complete success.
Your small bistro would have a small dining room. As much as it offers instant coziness, how can you fit in everyone into a small space? It is the heart of your restaurant, and whatever the concept you are planning the design should include seating, waiting area and storage. You may be tempted to cram the dining area with more seating, but this will result in poor service. Staff as much as customers need to maneuver between tables and no one will enjoy their meal if people are constantly banging against tables and chairs.
Each table should be 24 inches apart. You can put in restaurant booths as a space saving option. Booths like chairs come in various shapes, colours and sizes. When planning a dining space, consider flexibility. For instance, if you are having a large dining party, the tables should be able to be shifted around to incorporate a large crowd, and in the case of a smaller party, the same concept should follow.
Whether it is a sprawling eatery or small bistro, you need to secure financing. For this, a restaurant consultant should present a well written business plan to investors. A business plan should incorporate the startup budget, payroll, profit and loss and other operational expenses. In addition, there are numerous elements you should consider or may encounter in the future including tax laws, health codes and licensing.
A big step to starting a new restaurant is how to advertise your bistro. Even for a smaller restaurant, high turnover means higher profits. Promote your small restaurant using traditional marketing methods and social media marketing. A social media marketing strategy will offer you new ways to reach locals and customers outside of the target audience. Just because a restaurant is huge, it doesn’t automatically mean it is successful. The same rule applies if a restaurant is small, it doesn’t mean it cannot be successful.
